For centuries, witches have used a black and white candle on their altars. The use of them and what they symbolise is personal to each witch, what they have been taught and what they believe. Black and White can symbolise anything from the God and Goddess, Good and Evil, Light and Dark etc. No matter what they symbolise, they represent balance.
In colour magick, White can be used for purity, healing, peace, harmony, unity, truth, clarity, sincerity, spirituality, and wholeness. White can also be used to aid in meditation
Black by its very nature absorbs, it is therefore used to absorb and neutralise negativity and is often used in banishing (including bad habits), it can be used to repel black magick and can be used for protection. Black promotes inner strength and self-control. It can offer support during times of loss and grief.
Using both black and white on your altar will bring a balance of energies to your working area. Black will neutralise negative energies and White will cleanse and purify and together both will bring protection to your altar and sacred space.
In an ideal world, you would have one black and one white candle on your altar, but I know this isn’t always practical. I used to have to keep my altar tools hidden away in a box. I used the lid as my altar when I needed to work magick. I couldn’t have candles in my room at the time, nor could there be any evidence that I had been burning candles, so I had to improvise. This set is based on what I used then and continue to use to this day.
Each set contains a beautiful herbal recipe which is split equally between the two. You can read more here about my process of making charms
You could place them in the centre of your altar next to each other, one either side of a pentagram or wherever you feel called to putting them.
