How to cast a circle

Casting circle is an important part of creating safe magick as it forms a protective bubble between you and the spiritual world. It also acts as a container for the energy that you create until you are ready to release it to the universe. Picture in your mind the traditional witch’s hat, a cone shape that is wide at the bottom and tapering into a point at the top. This is a representation of the cone of power that you build within a circle and direct it out like a beam of energy into the universe for manifestation.

Casting a circle does not have to be complicated. There are many ways that you can read about online and in books. I fully support this as you must find what resonates and works for you.
How to cast circle is one of the most asked questions within the witchy world. So many get frustrated because they cannot visualise like the book says. Do not worry, I cannot visualise either, so I am going to share with you an easier way.

I would like you to try this before you attempt to practice magick. Find somewhere comfortable, it doesn’t have to be inside your sacred space as this is only practice. All you need is a compass (on your phone is fine), a wand, a clear quartz point etc. If you don’t have these, your finger is perfectly fine.
It is completely up to you which element you start with, every witch will have their own preference. I start with East ~ Air.

Do some deep breathing for a few minutes and let go of the day’s worries. Focus your attention on what you are trying to do, it won’t do you any good thinking about what shopping you need to get tomorrow. Push any thoughts like that aside and focus on being open to the energies around you.
You will need a compass (you might have one on your phone). Open the compass and face whichever direction you choose. I am writing this as I do it, so I face East and hold my quartz point out in front of me. I close my eyes and say out loud ‘I call upon the element of air to protect my circle and my magickal workings here today’ while my eyes are still closed, I try to remember what it feels like to have the wind blowing against my skin and through my hair.
You should go around the circle Deosil (clockwise)

I move onto South ‘I call upon the element fire to protect my circle and my magickal workings here today’ I try to remember how the hot summers sun feels on my skin.
I move onto west ‘I call upon the element of water to protect my circle and my magickal workings here today’ I try to remember what it feels like to have a shower or to have my hands in hot water as I’m washing up.
I move onto North ‘I call upon the element of Earth to protect my circle and my magickal workings here today’ I try to remember how it feels when you have your bare feet in soil or on the sand.
I then move onto spirit. I hold my quartz point (or finger) up the sky ‘I call upon spirit to protect my circle and my magickal workings here today’ I am mindful here that I am
contacting spirit and I am respectful. I then say, ‘As above’ and touch the ground as I say, ‘So below’. Finally, I state out loud ‘This circle is now protected and complete’.

Now I like to smudge inside the circle. I also smudge myself too.

At this point I go about whatever magick I am creating. However, I always mange to forget something that I need once I have cast my circle, as I’m sure you will too at some point. You do not need to close your circle if this happens. You simply take your quartz point (wand, finger etc) and draw a line from bottom to top to open a doorway. Step through it and close it again going from top to bottom. Get what you need and open another doorway in the same way as above, step through it and close the doorway. Now you can continue your work.
If you are new to casting circle, I want you to try casting and closing circles a few times so that you get a sense of what it feels like and see if you can notice a shift in energy.

It really is as simple as that.
